Do our devices really last as long as they should?

Postby Tendz » 25 Sep 2025, 23:29

Today devices these days are built with planned obsolescence in mind. They work fine for few years then slow down or become hard to upgrade.

Do you think companies intentionally make devices like that, or is it just that new technology moves so fast that older models can’t keep up?

It is true that many modern devices seem to age quickly, and often start to malfunction after a short period of time. This situation gives the impression that companies are deliberately creating them to force people to buy new ones.

But technology is also changing very quickly. New applications require more power, and sometimes older devices cannot keep up with these demands. This forces users to replace devices involuntarily.

The important thing is to learn to choose quality devices and take good care of them. Also, being aware of your rights as a consumer is one way to protect yourself from excessive use.

Choosing quality products, taking care of them, and knowing your consumer rights is the best way to avoid unnecessary hassle.

Our devices can last a long time if we choose quality products, take good care of them, and know our rights as consumers. Knowing how to claim a warranty or service is the best way to avoid inconvenience. Consumer education is protection.

I have a phone that is working really well because I take care of it, but here's the thing. I cannot use it anymore because I cannot install apps on it because the apps creators have deals with the phone makers to make older phones unable to have these apps. People will be forced to buy a new phone. The phone is not broken. It's working well. But many apps have blocked the phone to force the owner to buy a new phone.

I think in some ways, there is an inbuilt obsolescence.
Manufacturers would not admit to it.
Yet even with such factors, the way we use our devices makes a lot of difference.
I got a Redmi 7 phone in 2019 March.
I changed it in June this year.
The condition was good but it has slowed down over the years.

If I had not been handling it carefully, it would not have lasted so many years.
Similar is the case with laptops as well.

My device is quite old as well. I also use it carefully, though it is my primary device. Still haven't faced this issue of not being able to download apps as device is unsupported, how old is yours?

Unfortunately they do not. Most phone batteries claim to last for at last two years before it starts degrading but majority of them don't even survive the year.

True, on paper it is extremely strong but when you buy it, it is not as strong as they claim to be.

It's true, our devices often don't last as long as we expect. The descriptions on the product leaflet are very good, but the reality is different. Phone and laptop batteries start to deteriorate early, especially if we use them excessively. But if we learn to take good care of them—like not overcharging them or avoiding extreme temperatures—we can extend their useful life. Let's be careful, not despair.
