Alright, so long, Skype. You actually helped me pay the bills teaching English to folks online and listening to their problems as an online therapist. Good times... mostly. Now everyone's hopped over to Facebook, Messenger, Zoom, Line, all those shiny, free distractions.
Remember when Skype boasted about its amazing customer service? Yeah, well, being a paid service in a world drowning in free stuff tends to be a fatal business decision. Who needs quality when you can have endless cat filters, right?
So, the official plug is being pulled. Another digital ghost in the machine. At least I won't have to explain to any more students why my video feed looks like it's being transmitted from the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Farewell, you glitchy, occasionally useful relic. ESL teachers everywhere will probably shed a single, laggy tear. Microsoft now want people to use their new platform
Teams.
