RIP skype

Alright, so long, Skype. You actually helped me pay the bills teaching English to folks online and listening to their problems as an online therapist. Good times... mostly. Now everyone's hopped over to Facebook, Messenger, Zoom, Line, all those shiny, free distractions.

Remember when Skype boasted about its amazing customer service? Yeah, well, being a paid service in a world drowning in free stuff tends to be a fatal business decision. Who needs quality when you can have endless cat filters, right?

So, the official plug is being pulled. Another digital ghost in the machine. At least I won't have to explain to any more students why my video feed looks like it's being transmitted from the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Farewell, you glitchy, occasionally useful relic. ESL teachers everywhere will probably shed a single, laggy tear. Microsoft now want people to use their new platform Teams.

I never used Sykpe. I know Oprah used it. My kids tried to get me to use it. But they couldn't drag Momma into it. If you want to talk to me, come to my house or contact me on Facebook. :)

Well, it is a strange feeling. We used Skype as an Official tool for quite some time.
Now MS teams, Zoom etc have taken precedence.

Microsoft Teams replaces Skype.

So long, Skype. It had a nice run. I used Skype to call my mom while I was overseas and it worked pretty well overall. Decent video and sound quality, and it cost me nothing. It's fallen off the radar for a long time though so this is for the best.

There was no way that Skype would be able to survive the competition. Back in 2009, Skype helped me to keep my distant relationship.

Skype was actually a pioneer in the video calling service. The developers were supposed to improve it to make it better. But they rested and it went down.

I don't know how Microsoft didn't see potential in this app? During corona they should market it and make better mobile app. Other apps had much stronger marketing. They could run Teams and Skype paralel.

Also zoom got popular for their filters, you change your background without blue screen

Some will miss Skype for its unique qualities, but many are already switching to new tools.

I didn't know that Skype had gone forever. But when I read this post, I straight away headed to Google and entered the search term. Wikipedia as usual used the word "Skype Was" which means that it may no longer be existing. Oh sad, the skype. RIP. But don't forget, its TEAMS now!
