I work in the government. When it comes to salary and benefits, I can say that working in the government can be a good option. That is why many people are aiming to enter government service. But getting the job in the government is not easy. You need to pass civil service examination and or teacher's board for teachers. Even if they are saying that we have more days off, we are on-call. Meaning, even if it is a holiday of you are on leave, the government can recall you in the exigency of service. You are a public servant 24/7.

This is so very true and have seen this happen with a number of government servants but they do enjoy the perks they receive from job

A government job is better unless you own the private business. In that case a private job is better.

But consider this. If all the really smart people work in the private sector and the unintelligent, incompetent people work for the government, sooner or later the government may become corrupted and the private business owners will have to move with their business and go live in another country.

Any country needs qualified capable citizens in both public and private sectors.

That's what is exactly happening in India. The government allots 100 for a job and the actual amount reaches to common people is 40 or even lesser (it was 15 a couple of decades back). I won't write more than this here but it should give you a general picture. India has too many public services under government control. No competition in most sectors is the reason why people are not getting a good service.

Oh I see. I didn't realize India had a lot of services under government control. In the USA an entrepreneur might see poor quality service supplied by the government as a business opportunity. If there isn't too much "red tape and bureaucracy and government restriction" involved with setting up a business, they might just create a niche to sell those services. If the public wants those services and is willing to pay for them because of better quality, the business owner might go to Washington if necessary to get laws and rules changed so they provide the services. Socialism is sometimes needful but Capitalism can be a beautiful thing.

The government job has a lot specs. About from the fair and very discounted social amenities, it has security. Unlike the private sectors, when you retire well, you have your pension to fall back on. Besides, you can afford yourself more time than private jobs which are very demanding.

It's a matter of loving what you do. Personally, I am happy when I serve my countrymen. It is something that can not be paid by any amount of money. Well, Actually, even if I retired from the service, I will continue to serve the people in any way possible.

That's right, but in India vested interests would not let it happen. The present government tried it best during its last five years tenure (the elections are going on) but the entire opposition is trying its best to topple the government and the developments it did so far will be reversed to old ways of corruption.Most of the opposition parties here are families owned working in self interest or based on cast and greed rather than working for people. If the opposition wins, ....... oh that's scary.

I'll go for a government job because its got lots of advantages although the pay might be low. The only good thing with private jobs is that the pay is always good.

I do prefer government job because ita pay is good and also they still pay your even when you retire.

Government job can be good but as they say it will be difficuly for a honest person to keep working with honestly

@JASPREET my father joined as an Assistant engineer and retired as an Executive engineer while his juniors reached to the post of Deputy/Additional chief engineers just because my father never remain in good books of higher officers because he did not accept bribes. He was promoted to Superintending engineer's post after his retirement that too since he went to tribunal. That created kind of hate for government job in me.

I hear citizens in other countries with the same complaint. They hold people down so they can control them; and then wonder why it's so much crime. I don't justify the crime. But I do understand the anger at the injustice and the inequality. Greed for sure is generic throughout the world. And while other countries may not use the word "caste", the inequality still exists.

It depends on the given job as well.There are good jobs with many benefits in the government and in the private field as well.It depends on luck as well.

I would love to be in the government to work if I will be given a chance because of less work and less stress compare working in the private sector that sometimes very stressful.

I would rather like and love for the public with a supportive government rather than working for government that doesn't work in the mass interest for its people. After all , a government worker is supposed to be known as government/public servants but in our country they are known as Government officials who act as the owners of the country.

Well now that we are going to have election in India, you can consider the left wing to bring back more dictatorship and red tape. It's pretty sad if left wing wins. Good things will come to an end sadly. Even the govt job will continue to be lazy.
