Fake traffic jam

Postby mrki444 » 01 May 2025, 07:00

I am not sure is this true, but if it is then it can be funny but worrying in same time.
A German artist wheeled around a cart carrying 99 smartphones, all running Google Maps, down an empty street. The result? Google Maps thought there was a massive traffic jam and turned the street red!
So he made fake traffic jam.
Funny part is make fake traffic jam but worrying part is how some creativity without coding skills or some techincal knowledge exposed how our digital world can be tricked by something as simple as... walking with phones.

I remember hearing about this story, or perhaps it was someone else doing the same thing. It would take a lot of resource to get access to 99 mobile phones all connected to the Internet.

Do you have a link to the story with further details mrki444 ?

Yeah but what if ambulance goes around instead of short road? Maybe somebody late at work thinking there is a jam so I go otherwise. He can even cause jam somewhere else.

Lol it's funny and also possible, at the end of the day these apps, bots or whatever are wired to a specific way, hence it can be hacked or bypass or there are certain situations they won't be able to interpret correctly.

Since cars have more and more tech, cyber attacks will be more often. What if somebody hack specific car navigation and with fake traffic jam and send it into trap?
