A jar of pre-made "carbonara sauce" sold in the European Parliament store has ignited a fiery diplomatic row with Italy.
The controversy is due to the Belgian-made sauce's use of "Pancetta" instead of the traditional "guanciale" (cured pork cheek), a culinary offense to Italian purists.
Italy’s Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, publicly condemned the product as the "worst of 'Italian-sounding'" food, which he argues misleads consumers and undermines Italy’s culinary heritage.
He demanded an immediate investigation, asserting that such imitations cost Italy an estimated €120 Billion annually.
While the Belgian supermarket chain maintains the product complies with current regulations, the incident highlights Italy's ongoing crusade to protect the authenticity of its beloved cuisine against global variations.
