Back when I was a lot younger, there were a lot more bugs flying around. Gas/petrol service stations with the big rooftops over the pumps were lighted at night. The entire ceiling was covered with flying bugs of every kind attracted by the lights. If you drove a car any distance, the windshield was covered with insects that had made a direct hit. It took a lot of effort to clean the windshield every time you stopped for fuel. The biggest headache at any outside meal was swatting bugs away.
In recent years, I have noticed there are a lot fewer bugs in the air. There are almost no bugs under the lights at service station. I've driven thousands of miles across country without a single bug splat on my windshield. I've noticed we hardly see any bugs during an outside barbecue. The trees surrounding my home used to flicker all night long with lightening bugs. There have not been any at all in recent years. I have not even been bitten by any mosquitos in the past 15 years -- all the time doing yard work.
I suppose we should look at these missing bugs as the “canary in the coal mine”. The outside air must be full of toxins to kill them all off. We are next.
