Retail business is a business type where we sell products or services to the end consumer for their personal consumption. One popular form of retailing are small stores, we call them sari-sari store. I used to manage one but due to transfer of location, I had to stop. I am contemplating of opening one but still doing research and thorough study on the market.

Have you ever tried retail business?

Opening a retail business is very expensive here in Ireland. We don't really have the very small stores that you have in Asian countries and there is a lot of bureaucracy to go through before you can open a retail business.

Thank you for that information. In our country, many people are earning minimum wage and some do not even have a regular job. They have these type of work where they are being paid on a daily basis. That's why they tend to buy their daily groceries in small stores. We can sell anything from canned goods, sugar, rice, coffee, detergent and other items we use every day. I am thinking of opening one because the last business that I had is a manufacturing business where I need a person with a specific skill to help me run the business. While this type of business, I can hire someone as long as he/she can read and compute. I can't manage the business alone because I have a day job and I can be assigned anywhere. As of now, I am still doing my research.

Thank you for the good wishes Fergal. I need to make a thorough study of this matter before jumping in. Unlike my online activities which I can bring anywhere for as long as there is an internet connection, having a physical store is different because I can't be with it for the whole day. I should have someone whom I can trust to manage the business while I am not around.

In our country, cement is being sold along with other construction materials. We called the store, Hardware store. How do you do it in your place?

We have something similar here in Botswana. They are these tiny tuck shops that function as convenience stores... on a much smaller scale.

I have definitely considered putting up a few, maybe three in remote villages a few 100 km away from my hometown. But that was when I planned to move there. Sadly, the plan fell through, and I'm not able to do it. I hope you go ahead with yours and have success with it too

Thank you @Angie10 for the good wishes! I have a lot of plans actually. Especially businesses I wanted to start. But then, time constraint is always an issue. I just can't find a good solution to this as of the moment. I need to find a person whom I can trust since we are talking about money here.

This is a good thread that you have created for everyone to realize that retail business can make a livelihood for people apart from their 8-5 job or those that do not have regular job. However, I would like to introduce selling of food stuffs as a retail business such as rice, pepper, tomatoes, groundnut oil, and other food ingredients. This type of business is lucrative and many consumers cannot do without it daily.

Yes, we can buy the items in bulk and sell those in retail. However, we should also be careful especially when some neighbors started to acquire items from our store on credit.

I have thought of this before but one thing with life is that things can change at anytime. I ended up with another kind of business, but who knows i might still be able to do this in the future.

We shouldn't stop trying out new business ventures and investments if we have the opportunity to do so. There may be challenges but with patience and hard work, we can earn a good income from business.

I have so many business plans on me so don't know which one is retail business,but right now I have open some business which am very sure will bring me good amount of money as return so better forget the retail business because you need to operate business which you have good knowledge about

Location is one of the things one should consider when planning to have a retail business especially if we could not manage it ourselves. This is why I can't start mine because I can't find a good location.

Thank you! I have the same problem when it comes to time. As far as people you can trust, people you can collaborate with, I wouldn't dream of it here. My fellow countrymen are more about what's in it for them, so they're always looking to swindle people. That's why our businesses always fail. Sad but true.
