I don't believe they are a real thing (at least not the kind of aura you are describing, as opposed to the aura as a term for an early indication that a person is about to have a seizure or a migraine). There isn't any good evidence that they exist, nor any good scientific explanation why they would.
That doesn't mean that people who claim to see them are con artists or liars though, at least not necessarily. I wonder whether some of them have synesthesia, a condition which can cause people to experience things with their senses differently (things like seeing sounds, experiencing numbers or shapes as colours etc.).
