Colors affect perception even when there is no real difference in the actual applications
The color red happens to affect people more than any other color and in different ways. Some either hate red when they see it while some are drawn to it. There is rarely a middle ground involved.

Back when I was in school, most pencils were in the standard yellow. You could also buy them in different colors, but people thought the other colored pencils were lower in quality. There was no difference but the color of the paint. However, it appears the world has forgotten those other colors. No #2 pencils can be found in any other color but yellow now. At least I could not find any in my multiple searches just now.
