Why they want people to adopt shelter and stray cats and dogs. Also a lot of breed cats and dogs are not healthy because of inbreeding. Pet shops will now only sell pet food, grooming supplies, fishes, birds , and turtles. A lot of cats and dogs are being euthanized at shelters because no one adopts them. They hope this will encourage people to adopt animals instead of buying. These will decrease stray cats and dogs in streets and give them home.

Interesting idea. Pet shops mostly don't sell cats and dogs here in Australia any more. I'm not sure what the law is about it but I haven't seen puppies and kittens in a pet shop here in years. If you want to buy them you have to get them from a breeder. Only registered breeders are allowed to advertise dogs and cats for sale, although people still do advertise them they just word it carefully. Technically you're only allowed to advertise if you're giving pets away.

Adopting from shelters is encouraged here, although I can see why people don't always want to do that. I'd like to have a rescue dog but I need to find one that meets specific requirements (or to put it another way, I need to suit the dog's specific requirements). I'd need a dog that wouldn't harm my chickens, so much as I'd prefer to adopt an older dog it might be easier to train one from a puppy to leave the chooks alone.

I wonder if this law in New York will work as intended, since people who want particular breeds, or smaller dogs won't want most of the dogs in shelters. A lot of the dogs at the shelter don't suit many people who want to adopt because, for example, they're too big. There are always tonnes of unwanted larger dogs like mastiff and great Dane crosses, which is sad. I would think in New York you could just drive a little way, buy a dog from a breeder and take it back to the city without much trouble.

They'd be better off trapping the rats than dealing with stray dogs and cats which cause additional problems (diseases which spread to pets and sometimes humans, hungry aggressive strays attacking people etc.). And the strays themselves are without a doubt better off if they're given good homes.

Inbreeding is the term. I think that's pretty common knowledge. Pugs are especially bad. They can't breathe well and their teeth sometimes just randomly fall out.

They will probably neuter and spay stray cats no one will adopt since people prefer kittens over adults.

This is quite an order. I am not sure what is the ground situation in all those days after the ban.
For many, Pet shops must have been a convenient place to go and have Pets.
Now that option is gone there.

My daughter was grocery shopping online. I have a bag of dog food including one of the bones dogs can chew on for their teeth.

I asked my daughter: Why did you buy this?

She says: It was really cheap!!

I'm like: WE DON'T HAVE A DOG!!

From now on I have to monitor her when she does grocery shopping.

I had a housemate who used to do things like that. He would buy the most random things just because "it was on sale".

I think it's good, they are lives, they don't deserve to be sold, I hope that China will make decisions like this soon since these animals are sold there as if nothing were happening, I'm not an animal lover or a protector by any means, but I feel happy about this decision they have made
