India's one of the northernmost areas of Leh and Kargil now connected to the National Power Grid

Postby ptrikha21 » 16 Jan 2019, 15:27

One of the India's northernmost - high mountain areas, with many inaccessible areas- Leh and Kargil have been connected to the National Electricity grid. State-run transmission utility PowerGrid made this tough engineering feat possible.
These two places have some of the world’s highest mountain ranges and harsh terrains. As per the sources, upon turning on power flowed for four hours through the 220-kV line and its four sub-stations connecting Leh with the northern grid at Alusteng near Srinagar. This would drastically improve the quality of life in these areas, especially in the long and harsh winters with temperatures dipping to 50 degrees below freezing.

In the long term, the link will help Ladakh-Kargil region emerge as India’s powerhouse by allowing evacuation of power from proposed solar projects with aggregate capacity of 7.5 GW.
