Quite well explained. There are old cultural practices which would take time to change.
I think marrying cousins was norm across many cultures earlier.
The ill effects have perhaps only recently been studied.

Majority of kids in the children's ward in the UK are Pakistani British who have multiple generations of cousin marriages.
