The Austrian story has become a hot topic after three elderly nuns Bernadette 88, Regina 86 and Rita 82 refused the terms of the Catholic Church. They were forcibly removed from a retirement home and returned to the Goldenstein Castle convent near Salzburg. They were evicted two years ago, claiming it was against their will. The trio decided to return in September on their own. Since then, they have been posting their daily lives on Instagram and gaining many followers.

The church tried to cut them a deal to stay in the convent but the terms were harsh. They were required to stop social media, stop talking to the media and fire their lawyers. They were also promised medical care and the support of a priest, but they said if their health dropped, they must return to the care home. The nuns said that promise was meaningless because it was until further notice and had no legal force. For them, social media is their protection and the public is their support. This has caused great tension between the sisters and church leaders.
