Do You Ever Sneak When Nobody Is Looking?

Postby Spontaneo » 13 Apr 2025, 15:03

I have been spending the weekend with friends. I have been freezing. The thermostat has been on 60 degrees when they consider the temperature to be warm. I have been wearing my winter jacket!

So, while my friends were still in bed this morning, I sneaked and turned up the thermostat.

I think that something is wrong with their furnace as their place did not warm up.

So, when they got up, I mentioned how i am freezing. I mean, I am wearing a winter jacket. Isn't this obvious?

One friend looked at the thermostat and said, "that's odd. the thermostat has been turned up".

Busted. So, I told the truth. I turned up the thermostat.

What would you do in this predicament? :( :(

That's not a polite thing to do when you are a guest in someone else's home.

Yep, but their house, their rules.

However, if you told them you were cold it would have been polite for them as hosts to make you, their guest feel more comfortable by turning the heat up.

This is all abstract to me because houses mostly don't have heating here. Our winters are short, and not so cold by Northern hemisphere standards, so we just rug up and wait it out.

Wow that's new to me, I can't imagine living in a house without heating. Do temperatures there ever drop below freezing point?

Hahaha I might have played dumb and NOT 'fessed up   But kudos to you for your honesty. Your friends aren't great hosts, though. I mean, if you were at my house and you sat there all swaddled up in your coat, as your host, I'd ask of you were cold. And if you were, I'd turn up the temperature for you. No biggie.

Back when I worked out of an office, there was always a big argument about how warm or how cold the office was between the ladies and the guys. They preferred it warmer while we wanted it cooler. So every so often, I'd sneak up and turn the temperature down on the sly  Not by much mind, lest they caught on

The coldest it gets where I live is about -5 degrees, and that's only at night/early morning for a week or two. It's colder out in the desert at night, or in the mountains, or further south, like Tasmania, where it snows. We never have snow here though. I had never seen it until I travelled to Europe as a teenager. Our house (most older houses here) is specifically designed to let heat out/ let the air flow through to make summer more bearable, so it would be hard to heat (and is also hard to cool with air conditioning). It's built up on tall stumps with a lot of windows and verandas all the way around.

When I was in elementary school, on Valentine's Day, we all had to create boxes for Valentines that we distribute to each other. A girl gave myself a valentine and she wrote on the valentine "You are a witch". So, I showed the valentine to the teacher. We both got sent to the Principal. Guess who got into trouble? I did! Unreal.
