Amish-Run Places

Postby Spontaneo » 16 Apr 2025, 06:26

Do you ever go to Amish-run places?

At local supermarkets, all grocery deli costs $8.99 and above! Yesterday, I went to an Amish Country Store and Deli where the cost of a pound of pepperoni was only $6.99! I bought a pound happily!

While there at the Amish place, I bought a huge sandwich for $6.99. I still have part of the sandwich in the fridge!

Then, I love Amish-made jam and bought a big jar of Cherry Vanilla fruit spread for $5.99!

My roommate bought lemonade, cashews and party mix.

If you ever get a chance to go to an Amish business, go!

I never been in the US so no but I have seen buffets run by them the food looks delicious since every ingredient is build from scratch and something they grow. They make their own butter and cheese.

We don't have Amish in Australia (except for a small community down in Tasmania I think? Not sure whether they're Amish or Menonites or something similar).

Yes, the Amish can create anything from butter and cheese to furniture to their own restaurants to their own hotels to building houses to buggy rides! That's just the beginning!

Some things they can't do though:
Get their hair cut (for women) or shave off their beards (for men)
Wear bright colours
Own or watch a tv
Use the internet
Own a computer or radio
Go to high school
Make friends with people in the outside world
Brush their teeth
Use cosmetics
Have their heads uncovered (for women)

Although technically people decided to be part of the Amish community voluntarily when they are baptised as adults I'm dubious that this could really be an informed choice for someone who grows up in such isolation and is denied a proper education. They do get to do the Rumspringe thing where they go and see the world for a year when they are teenagers, but there's still a lot of pressure to join the community when the alternative is never being allowed back and not seeing your loved ones again.
