Income from your PC

Postby raaman » 27 Aug 2017, 11:36

I came across an advertisement that said “rent your computer as a hosting server”. Is it good and safe or bad for us as well as our PC? Has anyone done this?

Read the words I have stated in quotes. It is not only companies but even individuals can do that it seems. But how far it is safe, I do not know.

Having your computer as a server, is not bad provided you have a dedicated personal computer. What really matters is the speed with which it can download or upload data. But it is safe.

I have a friend who makes some money renting the hard disk space as a server I never heard of it. I wouldn't rent my pc as a server unless they pay a very good amount of money, enough money to pay for a new pc in case something goes wrong.

If you do this I assume that your computer has to be switched on 24-7. That could be a problem if either your internet connection or your power supply aren't totally reliable.

What do you mean by 'dedicated'? Can you explain it a little further?

Have you experienced it?

I never heard of it but I will never allow someone other to access my computer, even if they pay me rent for that. Our privacy is more important than money and also it may impact my computer's performance.

By saying 'very good', how much do you expect?

I haven't heard of this before, but if I have to do this, then it would no longer be a personal computer. Infact I will reserve a seperate computer for this, privacy important. Plus my computer would much more exposed which I wouldn't want to.

Maybe someone who has done this or heard of it before can help us with its advantages and disadvantages.

Of course, who knows there may be people who are doing this for a side/second income!
Gina145 wrote:could be a problem if either your internet connection or your power supply aren't totally reliable.

That's bound to happen once in a while for which we cannot blame anyone.

I never heard about this here, maybe the market is too small here.
In fact, my PC can't afford that too, it's working slow. So, better not to take the risk for some little income.
