In regards to the OS, it is not just install updates for your version of Windows, it is also about updating to the latest Windows version. XP users with updates that install automatically will be up to date with XP security patches but still far behind WIndows 10 in terms of general security.germainebull wrote:Fergal wrote:2. I have set my OS to update itself automatically.
I am wondering; how about the browser? Would a non-up-to-date browser put my computer at risk?
Basically everything your install is a security risk and and provides extra attack surface. Programs like Word that may not even connect directly to the internet can be exploited through malicious word documents. Only install programs you need and keep them all upto date. Browsers especially as they are usually the first line of defence and first thing to get targeted. Disabling flash in your browser will also go a long way to protecting you aswell.
